If you’re a runner or simply someone who enjoys a good pair of running shoes, you may have heard these terms before. But what do they really mean?
Maximalist Shoes

Maximalist shoes are all about cushioning and comfort. They usually have a thick, chunky sole that provides lots of support and shock absorption. These shoes also often have a large toe spring (the upward curve in the forefoot) which can help with forward propulsion. These shoes are great for long-distance runners, anyone who wants to reduce impact on their joints, and for runners with bunions and metatarsalgia (forefoot pain). One thing to note is that these cushioned shoes sometimes do not last as long as traditional running shoes and should be replaced more frequently. Some examples of these shoes include: HOKA One-One (Pictured), Altra The Olympus, and the New Balance Fresh Foam.
Minimalist Shoes

Minimalist shoes are all about feeling the ground beneath your feet. They typically have a thin sole and minimal cushioning, which allows for greater flexibility and a more natural running experience. Minimalist shoes are for athletes who want to strengthen their feet and lower legs. They can also be great for training and weightlifting as they allow for more proprioception – they allow your feet to sense the ground better and in turn can improve your sense of balance. You do have to be careful with these types of shoes however as running in these shoes has been shown to increase occurrence of stress fractures, so be careful not to overtrain! Examples of these include the Vibram V-runs, Xero Shoes Mesa Trail, and Altra Escalante Racers.
So which one is right for you? It all depends on your personal preferences and needs. If you’re an aging athlete dealing with joint pain or want extra support, a maximalist shoe may be the way to go. If you’re looking to improve your running form or strengthen your feet, and willing to transition slowly, a minimalist shoe may be a better fit.
