Foot care to manage bunion pain and improve comfort.
Comfort Starts With the Right Support

Is foot pain affecting the way you move or stopping you from wearing the shoes you love? If you’ve noticed a bump beginning to form around your big toe, you may have developed a bunion. While painful, these may be treated with the right care.
At Step Right Foot Clinic, you can trust our team to deliver support and care with tailored treatments.
What are Bunions?
Hallux abducto valgus, a condition commonly known as bunions, refers to the change in angulation of your big toe and the bony bumps that can develop and protrude from the outside of this joint. You may notice that your big toe is moving inwards toward the second toe.
Bunions can develop on either side of the foot. A bunion usually forms at the base of the big toe, while a tailor’s bunion forms near the base of the little toe. Both can cause pain, swelling, pressure in shoes, and worsening toe alignment over time.
Most often, bunions are caused by wearing shoes that are too small or narrow. It is very common in women, especially those who wear high heels or ballet flats/loafers regularly. Other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, may also put you at higher risk. Genetics, activity level and your foot type also play a role.
Signs and Symptoms of Developing Bunions

Bunions result in a protruding bone that causes pain and discomfort.
As your foot is pushed out of the correct position, additional pressure is placed on your feet.
This may cause other potential issues, including:
- Tough thick skin on the big toe or forefoot
- Pain
- Swelling
- Redness and inflammation
- Numbness
- Clawing toes
- Difficulty walking
- Corns and calluses
Treatment Options for Bunions
Bunion treatment can come in several forms. To find what works for you, your registered chiropodist and podiatrist will conduct a podiatric foot assessment to assess the cause of your concern and develop a personalized plan.
- Custom Orthotics: Custom orthotics are tailored to your feet, correcting their alignment and relieving pressure. This may treat the cause and reduce pain.
- Physical Therapy: Specific stretches and exercises may be employed to help your foot maintain its mobility and reduce stiffness.
- Splints and Wrapping: Splints may help correct the foot’s alignment, while padded wrapping is employed to reduce friction and provide cushioning. In some cases, crutches may be recommended as well.
- Bunion Surgery: Traditional bunion surgery involves removing the bunion and surgically realigning the bones of your foot. This is usually only used in more severe bunion cases. This surgery is usually performed in hospitals.
- Corn and Callus Removal: Your registered chiropodist may remove any corns and calluses that have developed to help reduce friction around the area, and make you feel more comfortable.
- Fitted Footwear: Carefully fitted footwear may help to alleviate pressure placed on your feet, reducing pain. While this will not treat the issue, it may prevent it from worsening.
