Step Right Foot Clinic

Not all flat feet need treatment — but some do. Let’s catch the issues early and support growing feet the right way.

Is It “Just Flat Feet” — or Something to Watch?

Pediatric Flat Feet

Flat feet in kids are common — and in most cases, totally normal. But when they’re accompanied by pain, fatigue, poor balance, or delayed walking milestones, it may be time to take a closer look.

At Step Right Foot Clinic, our Chiropodists in Toronto assess and monitor children’s foot development and provide custom orthotics, footwear advice, and gait correction when needed. Our goal isn’t to “fix” something that doesn’t need fixing — but to intervene early when flat feet start affecting comfort or mobility.

No referral needed — and early guidance can make all the difference.

What Is a Pediatric Flat Foot?

Pediatric flat foot (also called flexible flatfoot) refers to the absence of a visible arch in a child’s foot, especially when standing.

In most children, this is:

  • Developmentally normal under age 5–6
  • Flexible (arch appears when non-weight-bearing or on tiptoes)
  • Painless and not a cause for concern

However, if flat feet persist into later childhood and are accompanied by symptoms, intervention may be needed to prevent long-term compensation and fatigue.

Causes of pediatric flat foot may include:

  • Ligament laxity (very flexible kids)
  • Genetics (family history of flat feet)
  • Poor foot mechanics
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Neuromuscular conditions (rare)

When to Seek Help for Flat Feet in Children

You may want to bring your child in for an assessment if they experience:

  • Pain in the heels, arches, or ankles
  • Fatigue or leg pain after walking or playing
  • Tripping, poor balance, or “awkward walking”
  • Uneven shoe wear
  • Walking on the inside edge of the foot
  • Delayed motor milestones or refusal to be active
  • Complaints of “tired feet” and wanting to be picked up or carried frequently

These signs could indicate abnormal biomechanics, tight muscles, or overpronation — all of which are treatable.

How We Help Kids with Flat Feet

Our approach to pediatric flat feet is evidence-based, non-invasive, and personalized to your child’s growth stage and symptoms.

  • Gait & Biomechanical Assessment: We evaluate your child’s posture, walking pattern, and flexibility — with age-specific expectations in mind.
  • Custom Pediatric Orthotics: Our orthotics in Toronto are slim, comfortable, and designed for growing feet. For kids with symptoms or poor foot function, orthotics can:
    • Support the arch
    • Improve alignment and walking
    • Reduce fatigue and pain
    • Promote healthy development.
  • Footwear Guidance: We help you select proper shoes for school, sports, and play — including arch support, heel counters, and cushioning.
  • Moisturizer and Medication: In some cases, tight calf muscles or Achilles tendons may contribute to flat feet. We provide home exercises and activity tips.
  • Monitoring Through Growth: If your child has no symptoms but flat feet persist, we may suggest annual check-ins to ensure development stays on track.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — most children are born with flat feet, and arches develop naturally by age 5–6. But persistent flat feet with pain or poor mechanics should be checked.

Not at all. We only recommend orthotics for children with symptoms or dysfunction. Many cases resolve on their own.

Yes — custom orthotics are safe, non-invasive, and customized to their age, activity level, and growth.

Untreated flat feet that cause poor mechanics may contribute to knee, hip, or back issues down the road. Early care can help prevent this.
