Diabetic, Venous & Arterial Wounds
Chronic wounds need more than a bandage — we offer care towards healing and protecting your feet.
Wounds That Won’t Heal? We Can Help.

Foot ulcers and chronic wounds are more than surface issues — they can lead to infections, hospitalization, or even amputation if ignored.
At Step Right Foot Clinic Toronto, we treat foot ulcers of all types — not just in patients with diabetes. Whether caused by neuropathy, poor circulation (arterial), or swelling (venous disease), we take a proactive and personalized approach to heal the wound and address the underlying cause.
Our clinic welcomes walk-in consultations — no referral required. If you or a loved one has a foot wound that isn’t healing, let us help.
What Are Foot Ulcers?
A foot ulcer is a break in the skin that fails to heal properly, often becoming deeper, infected, or necrotic (with dead tissue).
While foot ulcers are often associated with diabetes, many people with no history of diabetes can also develop them — particularly those with poor circulation, venous insufficiency, or mobility issues.
The main categories include:
- Neuropathic ulcers – commonly seen in people with diabetes or nerve damage. Typically painless and found on pressure points (ball of foot, heel, toes).
- Arterial ulcers – due to poor blood flow. These wounds are painful, have defined edges, and are often on the tips of the toes or lateral foot.
- Venous ulcers – caused by poor venous return (circulation in the legs). Usually seen above the ankles and associated with swelling and skin changes.
Each wound type requires a comprehensive treatment approach.
Common Signs & Symptoms of Foot Ulcers
- Open sore, blister, or crater on the foot or lower leg
- Wound that won’t heal or keeps reopening
- Redness, swelling, or foul odor
- Numbness or tingling in surrounding skin (neuropathy)
- Leg swelling or skin discoloration (venous ulcers)
- Pain at rest or when legs are elevated (arterial ulcers)
If the skin is broken and not healing — especially on the foot or ankle — it should be assessed by a podiatrist immediately.
How We Treat Foot Ulcers
At Step Right Foot Clinic, we take a multifactorial approach to healing foot wounds and preventing recurrence.
- Wound Assessment & Classification: We evaluate the depth, location, drainage, infection risk, and cause of the ulcer to guide treatment.
- Sharp Debridement: We gently remove dead tissue, callus, or slough to promote healthy healing.
- Offloading & Pressure Redistribution: Using custom orthotics, dressings, casts, or padding, we offload the ulcer to prevent pressure and promote healing — especially critical in diabetic and neuropathic ulcers.
- Dressing Selection: We match the wound type to the appropriate advanced dressing — whether the goal is moisture balance, infection control, or granulation.
- Compression Therapy: For venous leg ulcers, we incorporate graduated compression therapy to reduce swelling and improve circulation.
- Diabetes Education & Prevention: We educate patients on daily foot care, footwear choices, and skin monitoring to help prevent ulcer recurrence.
