Hammertoes, Overlapping Toes & More
Support, straighten, and relieve painful or misaligned toes — no hospital surgery required.
Noticed Your Toes Curling, Overlapping or Changing Shape?
If your toes don’t sit or move the way they used to — it could be more than just your shoes. Conditions like hammertoes, claw toes, overlapping toes, and even short or underdeveloped toes can lead to pain, poor balance, and long-term joint issues if left untreated.
At Step Right Foot Clinic Toronto, we take a proactive, non-surgical approach to help you reduce pain, improve mobility, and prevent deformities from progressing. From orthotics to tenotomies, we help restore your toes — and your confidence.
What Are Toe Deformities?
Toe deformities are structural abnormalities that affect the shape, length, or alignment of one or more toes. Some develop gradually from pressure, while others are congenital or genetic. Common types include:
- Hammertoes – the toe bends downward at the middle joint
- Claw toes – bending at both the middle and tip joints, often affecting all lesser toes
- Mallet toes – bending only at the toe tip
- Overlapping toes – a toe drifts over or under an adjacent toe
- Adductovarus toe – the fifth toe rotates and tucks beneath neighboring toes
- Brachymetatarsia (short 4th metatarsal) – a congenital condition where the 4th toe appears shorter and often elevated or out of alignment
Each deformity places abnormal pressure on joints and skin, which can lead to pain, calluses, corns, nail trauma, or joint arthritis over time.
Toe Deformity Symptoms
You may be experiencing a toe deformity if you notice:
- Curled, stiff, or bent toes
- One toe sitting higher or shorter than others (often the 4th toe in brachymetatarsia)
- Painful rubbing in shoes or difficulty finding proper footwear
- Thickened skin (corns or calluses) over pressure points
- Limited toe mobility or joint stiffness
- Toe pain during walking, exercise, or standing
Toe Deformity Treatments
At Step Right Foot Clinic, our goal is to relieve pain, restore alignment, and prevent deformities from becoming permanent. Depending on your diagnosis, treatment may include:
- Custom Orthotics: Orthotics redistribute pressure, support abnormal mechanics, and reduce progression of structural deformities like brachymetatarsia and claw toes.
- Footwear Guidance: We help you choose footwear that accommodates deformities and prevents pressure or worsening (e.g., wide toe boxes, extra-depth shoes, rocker soles).
- Padding & Taping: Used to offload corns or elevate short toes, reduce friction, and realign flexible deformities.
- Tenotomy (In-Clinic): For flexible hammertoes or adductovarus deformity, we offer minimally invasive tendon release (flexor tenotomy) to permanently straighten the toe.
- Mobilization & Stretching: In early-stage or flexible deformities, we use manual therapy and strengthening to preserve range of motion.
- Toe Surgery: When deformities are rigid or causing significant limitations, we refer patients to trusted orthopedic or podiatric surgeons in Ontario for further management.
