Relief for Fifth Toe Pain
Pain or swelling on the outside of your foot? It could be a Tailor’s Bunion — and we treat it without surgery.
Bump Near Your Pinky Toe? Don’t Ignore the Pressure.

A painful lump on the outer edge of your foot can make everyday walking and even wearing shoes a challenge. This is often caused by a Tailor’s Bunion, also called a bunionette, which affects the fifth metatarsal bone near your little toe.
At Step Right Foot Clinic, we help patients manage Tailor’s bunions without surgery using custom orthotics, footwear changes, offloading pads, and inflammation-reducing treatments. Whether you’ve just noticed the bump or it’s been worsening for years, we’ll help you reduce pain and restore comfort.
No referral is needed, and we offer appointments at both Toronto foot clinic locations.
What is a Tailor’s Bunion?
A Tailor’s bunion, or bunionette, is a bony prominence that forms at the base of the fifth toe (the outer edge of your foot). It’s similar to a regular bunion, but instead of affecting the big toe joint, it impacts the fifth metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint.
The name “Tailor’s bunion” comes from tailors who sat cross-legged all day, putting pressure on the outside of their feet. While foot mechanics, genetics, and footwear are the main contributors today, the result is the same: pain, swelling, redness, and difficulty fitting into shoes.
Common causes include:
- Poor foot alignment or biomechanics
- Wearing tight or narrow footwear
- High-impact activities with side-to-side motion
- Flat feet or overpronation
- Genetic predisposition to bunion formation
Tailor’s Bunion Symptoms
You may be dealing with a Tailor’s bunion if you experience:
- A visible bump on the outside of your foot near the pinky toe
- Pain, burning, or throbbing at the base of the fifth toe
- Redness or swelling around the bunionette
- Worsening discomfort in tight or narrow shoes
- Corns or calluses forming on the bump due to friction
- Difficulty walking or participating in daily activities
Tailor’s bunions may be mistaken for corns, skin irritation, or general foot strain, which is why a proper diagnosis is key.
Tailor’s Bunion Treatment Options
At Step Right Foot Clinic, we use a conservative, non-surgical approach to relieve pressure and pain caused by Tailor’s bunions. Your treatment may include:
- Custom Orthotics: We design orthotics in Toronto that realign the foot and offload pressure from the fifth metatarsal, reducing strain on the bunionette and preventing further progression.
- Padding & Offloading: Specialized pads and spacers help reduce direct shoe pressure on the bunion, easing daily discomfort and minimizing friction. We can also stretch certain shoes to accommodate the bony deformity.
- Footwear Advice: We recommend shoes with wider toe boxes, better arch support, and materials that accommodate bumps without causing irritation.
- Anti-Inflammatory Treatment: If swelling or irritation is present, we may recommend topical or oral anti-inflammatories, as well as icing protocols or cortisone injections in moderate cases.
- Shockwave Therapy (for chronic pain): In persistent or inflamed cases, shockwave therapy can be used to reduce pain and improve tissue healing around the joint.
- Surgical Referral (rare cases): If the bunionette causes severe structural deformity or fails to improve with conservative care, we’ll provide guidance on surgical options through podiatric or orthopedic referral.
