Conservative Foot & Ankle Relief
Lump on your foot or ankle? It might be a ganglion cyst — and we can help you walk comfortably again.
That Soft, Sore Bump Might Not Be “Just a Bone”
Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form near joints or tendons — and while they’re not dangerous, they can become painful, restrict movement, or make footwear uncomfortable.
Unlike bone spurs or calluses, ganglion cysts often appear suddenly, fluctuate in size, and may feel squishy or firm. Some disappear on their own — but others may require drainage, cortisone injection, or offloading to reduce pressure and discomfort.
At Step Right Foot Clinic, we offer conservative, in-office treatment for ganglion cysts affecting the foot and ankle — with no referral needed.
What is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a benign (non-cancerous) lump filled with a thick, jelly-like fluid. These cysts develop from leakage of joint fluid or tendon sheaths and are most commonly found on the top of the foot, around the ankle joint, or occasionally near the toes.
While some cysts remain painless and small, others can interfere with walking, irritate nearby nerves, or make it difficult to wear shoes comfortably. They may be related to repetitive strain, joint irritation, past injury, or biomechanical pressure on the foot.
Proper diagnosis is key — as they can resemble other lumps, including bursitis, lipomas, or bony growths.
Ganglion Cyst Symptoms
You may be dealing with a ganglion cyst if you notice:
- A round, raised, or squishy lump on the foot or ankle
- Pain or discomfort when walking or wearing shoes
- Pressure or burning sensation due to nerve irritation
- Skin that appears stretched or shiny over the bump
- Fluctuation in cyst size over days or weeks
Cysts may be tender to the touch or painless — but if they’re interfering with daily movement or footwear, treatment can help.
Ganglion Cyst Treatments
At Step Right Foot Clinic, we assess the size, location, and symptoms of the cyst before recommending treatment. Our conservative, in-clinic options may include:
Drainage (Aspiration)
If the cyst is accessible and well-defined, we may perform a sterile aspiration to remove fluid and reduce pressure.
Cortisone Injection
In some cases, a corticosteroid injection may be used after aspiration to shrink the cyst and reduce recurrence.
Offloading & Padding
For cysts caused or worsened by pressure, we may recommend offloading techniques, padding, or orthotic modifications to reduce friction and discomfort.
Shoe Modifications
We’ll recommend footwear changes to accommodate the lump, especially if it’s being irritated by tight shoes or seams.
Referral if Needed
While most cases are managed conservatively, we’ll let you know if surgical referral is appropriate for large, painful, or recurring cysts.
