Surgical Care, Step by Step

At Step Right Foot Clinic, we understand that the idea of surgery may feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ll guide you through every step of the process, so you may feel informed and confident.

1. Reach Out

Get in touch with our team and let us know your concerns. We’ll arrange an appointment to help get you started on the right path.

2. Assessment

During your initial appointment, your chiropodist or podiatrist will conduct a podiatric foot assessment to help determine the most appropriate care for your needs. Where possible, we’ll explore conservative treatment options first to help avoid the need for surgery.

3. Surgical Treatment

If surgery is recommended, our team may be able to organize a suitable procedure to address your concern. In some cases, this may be performed at our clinic; in others, it may require care at a separate facility.

4. After Care

Once your surgery is complete, our team will provide tailored advice and guidance to support your recovery and help you get back to doing what you love.

Answering Your Foot Surgery Questions

Surgery is generally considered when conservative treatments have not provided lasting relief or when a condition has progressed significantly. If persistent pain is affecting your daily life or mobility, it may be worth discussing your options with our team. You may want to book a surgical consultation if you:

  • Have ongoing foot pain that has not improved with conservative care
  • Have a recurrent ingrown toenail or lesion that keeps returning
  • Are struggling with a bunion, hammertoe, or other toe deformity
  • Have chronic pain in the big toe joint
  • Have been told surgery may be an option and would like another opinion
  • Want to better understand your options, expected recovery, and whether surgery is appropriate

Podiatric surgery refers to surgical procedures used to treat certain conditions affecting the toes, forefoot, nails, soft tissues, and other structures of the foot.

These procedures may be recommended when:

  • Conservative treatment has not provided enough relief
  • Pain is persistent or worsening
  • A deformity is affecting walking or footwear
  • A lesion, wound-related pressure point, or recurrent ingrown nail continues to return
  • Imaging or clinical findings suggest that surgery may provide a better long-term outcome

Some procedures can be performed in office, while others may require treatment at a separate facility with an operating room setting.

By wearing compression stockings, individuals can experience relief from symptoms such as pain, heaviness, and swelling in the legs, allowing them to lead a more comfortable and active lifestyle.

A number of soft tissue procedures may be performed directly at our clinic, including:

  • Partial nail avulsion (PNA)
  • Total nail avulsion (TNA)
  • Soft tissue lesion removal (e.g. wart removal)
  • Tenotomy
  • Arthroplasty
  • Partial phalangectomy
  • Neuroma excision
  • Hallux extensor tendon lengthening
  • Minimally invasive plantar fascia release

Some procedures may require care at a separate facility, including:

  • Bunion surgery
  • Implant procedures
  • Cheilectomy
  • Brachymetatarsia correction
  • Tailor’s bunion surgery
  • Subungual exostosis removal
  • Metatarsal osteotomy, exostectomy, and condylectomy

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks, including infection, swelling, scarring, nerve sensitivity, or incomplete relief of symptoms.

Our team will discuss all potential risks with you in detail during your consultation, so you may make an informed decision about your care.

Recovery time varies depending on the procedure and your individual circumstances. Minor in-clinic procedures may require only a short period of rest, while more complex surgeries may require several weeks of modified activity.

Conservative Care First, Surgery When Appropriate

Many patients who ask about surgery are still good candidates for non-surgical treatment.

Our chiropodists provide non-surgical care for a wide range of foot conditions at both of our clinic locations. This may include nail procedures, nail surgeries, callus care, padding, footwear guidance, orthotics, biomechanical treatment, injections, and other conservative options depending on the condition.

For example, they can often help manage:
