Sudden Big Toe Pain? It Could Be Gout.
Waking up with sharp, burning pain in your big toe? Is it red, hot, and swollen? These are classic signs of gout, a form of inflammatory arthritis that often targets the foot — especially the big toe joint.
At our podiatry clinics in Toronto, we offer comprehensive care for gout, including prescription medication, tophi management, and joint protection strategies. Whether this is your first flare-up or a chronic issue, we’ll help reduce your pain and prevent permanent joint damage.
You don’t need a referral to see us — and you shouldn’t wait. Early intervention is key.
What Is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by excess uric acid in the blood. When uric acid builds up, it can form sharp crystals that deposit in joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues — causing sudden, severe inflammation and pain.
The big toe (1st MTP joint) is the most common site, but gout can affect ankles, midfoot, and even heels. If untreated, repeated flares can lead to joint erosion, bone damage, and the development of hard uric acid deposits called tophi.
Risk factors include:
- Diets high in red meat, seafood, or alcohol
- Kidney disease or dehydration
- Genetics
- Certain medications
- Obesity or metabolic syndrome
Gout Symptoms
Gout usually develops quickly and can be extremely painful. Look for:
- Sudden pain in one joint (often overnight)
- Red, hot, swollen skin over the joint
- Tenderness so severe that even bedsheets hurt
- Limited joint movement during a flare up
- Chalky white bumps under the skin (tophi – in chronic cases)
Without treatment, gout flares tend to increase in frequency and severity.
